Elshadai Relief and Development

“In 1989, on a hot summer day, Yemane Woldemariam was walking to a nearby village. Becoming tired he sat down under a tree to rest. A smell caused him to scan the area and he saw a corpse. A woman’s severed head was lying some distance from her body. Yemane assumed that she was the victim of vicious bombing aimed at civilians that had taken place in nearby Hawzen.

There was a baby tied, in the traditional fashion, to the woman’s back and Yemane realized that the baby was alive but glued by blood to the mother’s body. Yemane with the help of passers by removed the baby and buried the mother.

The baby was wounded too but Yemane took him to the next village and sought medical help from the clinic there. When the baby was discharged he took him to his own home.

It was an incident that caused Yemane to appreciate the need to look after children who were orphaned due to the atrocities of war. Many children were on the streets with no care whatsoever.

Elshadai Relief and Development, Ethiopia, is a local NGO established in 1989 to help orphaned and destitute children who lost their parents in the civil war. Now the organization supports children orphaned or destitute. Elshadai now has two children’s villages, (orphanages), one near Mekelle and one close to Wukro. The Villages provide shelter, food, clothing, healthcare and education to the children. They also learn farming skills by working on the Village farm. Boys and girls receive the same education and there is no lack of equality. Education and it’s capacity to improve the quality of lives is at the centre of the nurturing philosophy of this organisation.

Children are cared for until they cease full time education and this includes university. To date, Elshadai Relief and Development has cared for around 900 children in the two Villages.”
